The hand Project XIX: Sweetness and light

On top of my table, inside some folders, new chapters of the Hand Project await.
When this project
began I didn't think for a second it could extend to the people on the other side of the screen. But that's what had happened. Now you are part of my daily routine, my personal landscape.
Since I don't think I could draw all the hands of so many good people that pass through this blog, I randomly drawed some names to be included in the project.
But I was too excited with new projects on my table, so this one I put aside momentarily, waiting new inspiration, new desire. I'm truly unable to sit in front of a drawing as something compulssory, instead of entertaining, so some time has passed until I felt like stepping into this project again.
It's not a coincidence that I set my eye on the hands of Aran.
I have already told you about our blind date
and ever since we met I've thought of her hands often. I watched her while she was photographing, the same hands that take those magnificient picture of her sweet pieces, the eye looking for that special light. So the first outlined hands that I picked and put in front of me were hers.

The Hand Project XVIII: all over K

Karina's Hands

A few months back I decided to open up this project to my blog readers. This project was born as a way of representing my personal landscape. The people close to me. Some time has passed since I began writting this blog and the experience has proved gratifying.Plus, the bonds we've built are sometimes so interesting and have given me back so much that I couldn't put aside this new aspect of my life. Somehow it's all part of my life now.

Pairing Karina's and karin's hands because of their names was too obvious, but I liked it anyway. The more I thought about it it stroke me how different they are. Beyond their names, through their own blogs, I see two contrasted characters.

Karina is a passional blogger, using her page to verbalize her inner world, her aesthetic, literary, art or musical likings, her family history or her political views... I picture her laughing and crying all at once.

Karin is a delicate, reflexive and intimist blogger. Her pieces are gentle and highly inspired by nature and tales. She emphazises the little details, the light and the story behind objects. I picture her making shadows on the walls and telling fairytales to her kids.

The Hand project XVII: Start again. Part 2

Here you have the stories on Richie's hands. Thanks for your comments and mails.

The bear
I looked at him and I only saw a stranger with his hands on the steering wheel, sporting proudly a new watch on his right wrist. I never wear watches, I thought, as I smiled. He thought I was acknowledging the estatus that brand was suppossed to give him. I was smiling because I felt released completely and only thought about the mountain showing up behind his head through the window and I wondered if someday I'd climb it. I knew I wouldn't, but even so I still kept the smile on my face, listening to some car horns resonating at a road-crossing nearby where the traffic lights had stopped working weeks ago.
And I remembered then the swimming pool I used to swim in during summer, when things were fine. And I remembered the flashing smiles and the nights of heat and wind. For a time now, many of these memories were only a handful of photos stuck on an album. Sitting quietly on the bookcase. That guy had come to save me with his expensive watch and I knew that it was going to be useless as soon as I got into the car and he tried to ingratiate with me with a few rotten jokes and his Lenny Kravitz concert report from the previous week. I smiled and it was comforting to think that our galaxies were separated by million of inactive black holes. Still seated in the same car we would never meet. And although I knew all the words he pronounced, I didn't understand their meaning. For a moment I felt uneasy and aware of my possible ignorance, but I rolled down my window a crack and the air gave me back my smile. Before his stupor I put out my head and catched some sunrays on my skin as I hummed a Bonnie Prince Billy song. Then I knew I was alive.

The wolf
The telephone woke him up with its frightful ringing. He tried to reach it with his hand, but he didn't find it in the shadows. He opened his eyes a little wider, enough as to see the telephone on the floor just a few centimeters away from the trousers and the t-shirt he had wore the night before. It was too late. They had already hung. He didn't even bothered to check the call details on the screen. He puffed as he got back into his bed and layed his head on the pillow. He thought that maybe it was about time to buy some new pieces of furrniture. He rejected the idea, after all, the only people that came to visit him were friends in a similar situation and as everybody knows, men didn't mind decoration, the wall color or the untidiness. He enjoyed his mess, his accredited chaotic corner, full of books, cds, magazines and the computer on at all hours. The cell phone rang again and this time he picked it up effortlessly. His siter was persistent enough, he must have guessed. Well, he told himself, If he hadn't answered she wouldn't have stopped calling him. Following the conversation became a game. He knew the script and respected it perfectly. Soon he could return to his bed, but it was already too late. He decided to have a proper Sunday. He pretended to tidy up a bit, took a shower, got dressed, considered the possibility of shaving and finally refused. With air in his lungs and without cigarettes in his pockets he walked towards the beach. There was almost nobody in sight yet and the view before him was spectacular. He heard a motorcycle in the distance.

The Hand project XVII: Start again

Today's a good day. Today's Monday. A new week begins.
To start again. To take up the project where I parked it.
To start again. It takes a little at first, but then it's so easy.
My hand drawings, the pictures, take shape and pile up around me.
This here drawing sprout in my mind some time ago and I owe it.
I had made a deal and finally I've fulfilled it.
Here are your hands, Richie, my friend.

To start again can be disconcerting. Another trip through uncertain, wonderful, confused moments. The steps don't need to be firm but honest. To start again is a mind state.

Richie is an artist, talking his own language through his songs, with his symbols and his code. Sad, mundane, dramatic words. I can't describe McEnroe's music, but it leaves me with a feeling of simple loss. Nothing dark or sordid. That's why I've written two short stories on his hands, in my attempt to answer the music back. If someone wants to read them, I'll post and translate them.

The Hand Project XVI: Choice

Jorge's hands

I had two friends. I still have two friends but now they are an abstract being that mails me, that keeps in touch thanks to Internet. Funny enough, they happen to live in my same city, but we do not see each other even accidentally. Those things happen when you become a mother: you left some ends loose.
How funny it was when they picked each other. Both are very special. Vir has an exquisite taste and the most personal style. But she's a little deaf, you know. Jorge is a rare specimen of men, one of those who enjoys shopping, who's fascinated by art, music, movies and has a limitless curiosity and a rock band. But he speaks in the lowest voice.
They picked each other. I was their common ground.
They are creative, different, quiet, pessimistic, they are unique. And they make a great couple.

The Hand project XV: Radio Free Europe

Thereza's hands

Thereza's and Pia's work makes my day. Their light air, the optimism, the delicacy, the perfect use of color or the curious eye, the way they tell their own stories and a lot more things make me feel them close, even if we live in such different places. After drawing their hands I thought: "I'm having so much fun!"
As I commented yesterday to someone: It isn't hard to be nice to people that is nice to you. Plus, it happens to be so gratifying...

The hand project XIV: Atlantic Crossing

Manos dibujadas a distancia. Sentémonos a observar.

Hands drawn in the distance. I don't mean to undress anybody's soul here, but to dedicate a little time, imagination, effort... I'm getting used to this new challenge: sharing this personal project with known strangers, providing it with a new dimension. I can't foresee where this experience will take me or how long it will last. Let's sit to watch.

Kimberley's hands

Un nombre así engancha: When Skies are Grey.

I am very fortunate for having met many nice people through my blog. It amazes me how many mom artists you can find out there. Kimberley named her blog with the most wonderful name ever: When Skies Are Grey.
On the other hand, Jill's blog have come along with me since I set foot in the blogosphera.
Both are highly creative and familiar, and they both try hard to keep an artistic profile in her daily life. I've related to their words more than once.

The Hand Project XIII: Family Pack

Charo's hands

We pick the person we like, but don't choose its knapsack, its family. The in-laws are quite important. Mine were a box of surprises. My mother-in-law is an artist, painter, sculptor, eccentric and rebellious like a teenager. She's leading the train in Neverland Island. Fuel to the fire!
As you may imagine it gets hard to land on earth. When you step out of the fantasy and the multicolor life and you must face the day to day, from supermarket queues, the dreadful neighbor on the fifth floor, to the mundane organization of life beyond the painting, the recycling, the mud, the stucco, the tar…

Paula's hands

And now that Paula is here visitting, I couldn't let go the chance of drawing her hands. I happen to have two wonderful sisters-in-law. One lives in Lanzarote and the other one in London. A little wild, athletic, responsible, modest, independent… If it wasn't for the far distance they would be the perfect sisters-in-law. Or perhaps for this reason, already they are.

My daughters adore all of them. They notice their joy and their wildness.

The hand project XII: Thank you for the music (and a brand new draw)

Santi's hands

If I look back I only see a life full of music. What did I have before my daughters came? Music. What were my subjects of conversation? Music. Which were my activities? Concerts, tours, records… Before being a mother I was a fan, a tourmanager, I organized concerts, I created a record label, I participated in music zines, and fleetingly I wrote for newspapers and I worked in the radio. Those were funny, unique years. I made friends that I would never forget. Years full of extraordinary anecdotes.
The Inquilino Comunista is the paradigm of my life of music. They are part of my past and my present. Playing with those exciting memories, that creast of the wave affaire, and at the same time playing with my present mundane, familiar life. From time to time they escape from the dull adult life; with just a guitar stroke they bring back the memory of their greatest hits. The songs that make me feel that summer is here and that in my mind I will never get old.

Alvaro's hands

The hand project XI: communication

Erin's hands

Erin was one of the first bloggers to feature my blog. Through her moving way of writting, her enthusiasm and her strong will to look for beauty everywhere in the virtual world, I have drawn her hands. Since I don’t know her personally I just had to follow my impressions of her. It’s the first time I draw the hands of a stranger. It won’t be the last time. For me it’s important to know the person. Well it feels as I know her a little.
There’s an ocean between us and a couple of hands getting us together. It’s a moment, a connection, words back and forth, images and sensations.

The hand project X: paperdolls

I have two girl cousins of my age (we are only a couple months apart) with whom I have grown, year after year, week after week, summer after summer. When we spoke of our childhood and our present life we can analyze ourselves without fear of getting anybody pissed off. We accept ourselves as we are. And we are different. For us it's easy to see how our personalities have developed throughout time: M was a rebel then, now is exquisite and has great taste, always a fighter, rather fortunate and a level ahead of us in everything. A is brilliant, acute, realistic, familiar and not much interested in being meticulous.

When we were kids we played with paperdolls. We built houses for them, we created families and clothing. M was careful, a perfectionist and had paperdoll families impersonating tv series or comic books we hadn't heard of yet.

A chose to create large families, with enormous cars and M got upset because A could not handle them all too well. I was in the middle. We had a lot of fun. Those games have a lot to do with how we are now.

M's hands

The hand project IX: Health & Strength

My mom's hands

When I began this project I never thought my mom would be in it. Her hands are a tough reflection of a devastating chronic disease that started to twist her bones over twenty five years ago. But her hands are also a sign of a tenacity out of this world, a sign of life resistance, resistance to these circumstances that nobody asked for, that came uninvited to stay.
A few days ago a friend and I were chatting about our moms during our childhood days. I was scared when I realized I don't remember her that much in those days. I keep memories related to our family photo album, but most of them have vanished. They are not there. It is here with me the image of my mom trying to open a door with a stiff hand that wouldn't respond; from that moment on I remember it all. My mom's presence turned physical with that disease.
However, this ain't a sad story. Far from it. My mom never surrendered. She refuses to use her wheelchair if she can spare it, she keeps on cooking, even if she needs to use her inventiveness more than others to do so, she enjoys her granddaughters and she walkes. She's walking further in time that any of the doctors ever dreamed of. There's nobody as tenacious and stubborn as her, so determined to do things as long as she can. Or longer.
I never thought I could count on her for the project. Although hers is a survival lesson, she is a discreet person and shy about her hands, always trying to hide them from sight. I promised her not to post any pictures.

The hand project VIII: Vocations

Unai's hands

So this is Unai, the adventurer, the sailor. Sailing since he was four, he's been determined to make the Around The World Alone races, or so I've heard him say these last ten years. Last year he made it, in a sailing race with very few stops. And he came in third. He speaks of the hard and distressing moments, the small hallucination episode, but also the wonderful experience, the incredible sensation of accomplishing such a deed. Now he's getting ready for the Vendee Globe.
I picture him barefoot on deck, watching the stars out of the corner of his eye, enjoying the solitude, surrounded by that frightful immense sea. Explorer, crazy, a person fulfilling his dreams, doing what we fear to do. I cannot but idealize the epic spirit of his life. It will last through our familiar history.

Aitor's hands

A menudo silencioso, familiar, responsable, generoso y discreto.

My cousin Aitor has chosen an unusual path: he's a cook. Often silent, always familar, generous, responsible and discreet. A quiet shadow getting ahead amongst burners, hesitating, learning, two steps forward, one step back; accepting life as it builds up before us, uncovering the world ahead from the past. Optimist, positive... What would your dish recommendation be next time I visit the restaurant?
