Things to do today:
update the shop with new drawings
work on some poster series (I'm very excited about this)
drive my dad to the doctor
buy some groceries
play some loud music to rev up my energy
and maybe take some time to check some of the season sales...

::

Resolutions

I've resolved to
take my time, instead of rushing everywhere
make things that I want, instead of making things I am supposed to make
learn things from creative people around me
make more homemade videos; it's fun
learn to skate... a little
learn to knit a scarf
laugh more
smile more
...

What about you?
Do you have resolutions related to your creative life?

::

...

¿Y vosotros?
¿tenéis propósitos creativos?

My disjointed recollection of a confusing year

This is how 2011 went...
(a disjointed recollection of a confusing year)

Music. I have to begin with music.
If I had some money to spare I would have bought albums by Bon Iver, PJ Harvey, Tom Waits, Lucinda Williams, Wilco and John Grant, among others. I’m happy enough to listen to them and some more online.
Furthermore, it has not being a year prone to live shows for me, but I keep in my heart and memory the music of Helicón at the Museum of Artistic Reproductions here in Bilbao. A ghostly and enchanted evening.
2011 will be remembered as the year I didn’t go to the movies at all, except for that day I went with my girls to see The Secret World of Arriety. Maybe I will still have a chance to watch, True Grit, The artist,  Drive, Melancholia, Shame, Pina… movies I have been profusely recommended.
However, this year I have seen and followed more series than I can now remember. My favorites being: Downton Abbey, Enlightened, Game of Thrones and Mildred Pierce. Other series that come to mind and made me laugh were Portlandia, 2 broke girls, and Misfits.
Watching series online has been a treasure I didn't expect.
Again,  I haven’t read as much as I used to (where the hell did all my time go?): Borges, Taniguchi, Camilleri, Murakami, and I have just opened Andersen’s The red shoes.

Now that I look back, it seems that I didn’t go out enough or read enough... but I thank the internet for letting me keep up the pace in a different manner. There is so much I have experienced through my screen:
I can play and replay these videos a dozen times and still feel like

 Not to forget the many interesting TED talks that I have played while drawing (like this one). Art and good speakers to hear, a great combo for me.

And as for more art... I have discovered many artists and illustrators this year. More than I could list but at least let me mention some ongoing artist crushes: Jennifer Davies, Jazmin Berakha, Pakayla Biehn, Carson Ellis, and Kiki Smith (here too)
Ricardo Cavolo’s exhibit in Bilbao is worth of being mentioned as well. On a complete different level, I also enjoyed the great Antonio Lopez’s anthology at Bilbao’s Art Museum.

I realize that most of my time was split between vital turnings (moving, diving into the unknown, wandering) not so vital, but time-consuming moments (working on my etsy shop, getting hooked on Pinterest) and many projects:
Personal projects such as my illustrated book covers or my paper-puppets.
Comissioned projects (that set my dreams flying freely) like the cover and inlay art for the WoP album, the Helicón poster or the notebook for Impedimenta.
I have been also following other people’s projects: for example, Boooooooom’s Remake project is not to be missed
.
All in all, a year is made of all kinds of moments, as I have detailed, but there’s also a place and time for awkardness and ridiculousness too (remember this?) Or shocking, touching or bizarre moments like finding a sperm-whale on the beach. Or goodbyes.

I have deliberately left out the heart of this suffocating 2011: the crisis, the protests, the panic, the fear, the illness, the uncertainty. I really want it all out of my blog. I want to press the delete button and only keep the cream of my life.
I am grateful for my family and my friends. I want to keep them all close to me this new year. And I want the good moments and the bizarre ones, the long time no see meetings, the loud and the quiet times, the creative and the homey ones, and let all the exciting new projects begin to grow and come my way.
And as for you, I want you to be happy too.

He descubierto a muchos artistas e ilustradores este año.
Berakha,  Pakayla Biehn,  Carson Ellis y Kiki Smith.

Time for lists

It's not a school day.
So we'll spend the time making Christmas lists.
I love writing down these lists.
Please, share some of yours with me. I could use some extra ideas.
On another note, as you've seen, I've filled up my shop with lots of original pieces and prints.
Giving art surely is something very special.

::

Hoy no hay colegio y llueve a mares.
Será un día para hacer listas navideñas.
Me encanta hacer listas.
Por favor, comparte las tuyas conmigo. Me vendrían bien algunas ideas extra.

Wishlist, part three

My daughters have already written their letters. Pricess Marmalade wants several books, a little bambi toy and, surprisingly a bunch of strawberries. Princess Nutella wants a guitar, a drumkit, a game console, a doll for her sister and some kinda surprise. I, in the meantime, am trying hard not to surrender and surprise them with a few surprises. It isn't easy. Pink plastic is everywhere, is calling them from toy catalogues and shop windows... It looks so appealing to them... Surfing the net I haven't found many things within my budget... Any ideas?

Wishlist, part one.

::

The firts toys catalogues have arrived at our mailbox. My daughters' excitement as they were opening them was similar to mine as a child. However, as a mother, I dread this moment, when their eyes fill with never-before-wanted Barbies, Hello Kitty cameras they didn't know they even existed, twin-doll-strollers that could never fit in our small house... Still they are already making their own christmas lists and they're adding lines by the day. Us, the parents, will have to look for some balance between their hopes, good taste, education, common sense and pragmatism.

This contagious atmosphere has made me get out my own listings. So here, these are some of the things I wouldn't mind owning...

My list:

Books:

Este libro / This book
O este otro / Or this one
O este / Or this one too
el último por el momento / the last one today

A memory, a tale

60 x 80 cm
23 x 31 inches

In December not only I have Christmas to look forward, at the end of the month I also celebrate my birthday. We who were born on this month (or january) know the meaning of two for one.
I must admit that I'm not in need of anything. But if anyone wants to know what's in my wish list, here it goes:

Un sofa nuevo / A new sofa
Una mesilla de noche / A nighttable
Un pañuelo de seda / A silk scarf
Unos cojines de Jill / Jill's cushions
Unos pendientes / Earrings
Libros de arte / Art books
Esta camiseta, o esta, o esta o esta/ This tee or this or this or this one
Este libro / This book
Y este otro / And this one too
Un dibujo de Camilla / Camilla's drawing
Unos Tombow / Some Tombow pens
Un billete de avión / A plane ticket
Una obra de Rachel Denny / A Rachel Denny's piece
Un ciervo de Kimberley / A little deer by Kimberley
Una Gocco / A Gocco printer
Comics / Comic books
Un anillo o dos/ A ring or two
Una bufanda así o de otra manera / A wool scarf like this or another one
algo de cerámica / some ceramics
Un puñado de regaliz / A handful of licorice
Flores / Flowers

I didn't want anybody to think I'm on a high consumer mood, so on the other side of my list I've written the obvious wishes: peace, love, good health, friendship, talent, energy, time, another year of blogging...

That other life

* patinaría
* haría Bellas Artes
* me pondría más cremas para prevenir las arrugas
* haría más ejercicio
* dibujaría comics
* diseñaría telas
* tendría hijos antes
* me haría más fotos de adolescente
* no sería tan sosa
* ahorraría más
* tendría mejor memoria
* sería menos habladora
* diría menos mentirijillas piadosas
* probaría diferentes cortes de pelo
* haría un curso de fotografía
* formaría parte de algun colectivo artístico
...

............................................................................................

I've always liked to make lists, but lately I only make mind lists and I end up losing there I don't know where. On the other hand, Having a blog where I can do what I want feels comforting. So, why not fill it up with these mind lists of mine? At least I won't lose them.

Just because we all have ideas slipping away, just because we give up little things or the perfect image of how we would have liked to be, to accept ourselves as how we really are... This is my little list of what I would like to do or be in my other life:

*i'd skate
*i'd have an Art degree
*i'd use more cosmetic creams
*i'd do more exercize
*i'd draw some comic books
*i'd design some textiles
*i'd have children earlier in life
*i'd take more pictures of me as a teenager
*i'd have better sense of humour
*i'd save more
*i'd have better memory
*i'd talk less
*i'd not say any white lies
*i'd try different hairdos
*i'd take a photography course
*i'd be part of an artistic collective
...

This is life I might yet to live, but i am like i am, i have the time that i have. Don't misunderstand me, I like my life as it is, and I wouldn't rennounce to anything... so this is just a list. Of course this would have been more helpful if I had made it as a teenager...

indagar posibles regalos navideños
comprar pan
enfrentarme al ordenador para un trabajo pesado

sketching some girls
lazing around
watch the rain fall while I stand next to the heating
reading a comic book
doing some research for Christmas gifts
buying some bread
facing the computer for some hard work
