Two steps forward

Last Saturday I met up with Sara Morante to see the Egon Schiele exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum. As you have probably guesses, staring at every single inch on each framed drawing was a first-class art lesson. I could wander for hours around those decadent characters, those colors and those bold pencil strokes. Needless to say, it was the best way to avoid the rain and the cold outside.
And I went home with a new book under my arm.

Summer's in the city, do what you gotta do

before summer slips away
i'll leave town on tiptoe
and i'll be posting from the sand...
soon

antes de que el verano se desvanezca
dejaré la ciudad de puntillas
y escribiré desde la arena...

Invaders

Bilbao BBK Live festival has given the city thousands of people taking photographs, wearing red bracelets on their wrists, happy young people, having a good time and on the side, some free gigs during the day. Here in pictures: Scottish band The View, playing at La Alhóndiga, and people taking pictures at the Guggenheim museum before leaving town.

Ups and downs

Just like this week's weather has toyed with the temperature (from 40º C to 15º C, alternatively), just like the sky (from blue to greyish), like the wind which has shifted from hot to freezing, I have felt so. How rare of me to be talking about the weather, right? (irony).
This week we have experimented some serious setbacks on the beginning of building our future home and I have felt a slight drop in my otherwise optimistic mood. This is why my blog posts have been few and scattered. I didn't want to unload my frustration here, particularly because husband doesn't like it a bit. Of course, he's right.
I know there's always a silver lining for (almost) every situation. I tell myself we happen to enjoy springtime in the city, surrounded by the color, the hustle and bustle. And living in the heart of it, it is just so easy to go out, meet friends and follow different leads. My chaotic and frustrating week has had a few pleasant a creative moments too, and a fantastic end, thanks to Deborah and Nadia's visit. There's nothing like hanging out and listen to people who are passionate, resourceful and full of projects to enlighten me. My mind spins with a thousand ideas and suggestions. Forget about the rest.

Así me he sentido yo.

Days on the sunny side

I went for a walk yesterday along the riverbank with my friend Javi Cámara. We spent the whole morning talking about art, music, interests and troubles. He's an outstanding big-format painter, with a grounded classical art education, but every now and then he lavishes smaller pieces for friends and followers. That's why he's opened up an Etsy shop too and I do recommend you go check it.
Not many things compares to sitting in the sun to stare the blue sky and the seagulls absorbed in an animated chat.
Have a happy Friday!

¡Feliz viernes!

At the park

Meeting a friend at the park café. One of my favorite places, especially on a weekday morning. It's quiet and empty, with solitary terrace chairs, chilly wind and gorgeous trees around. A few tourists, joggers and retired men blend in the scene. I stare at everything as if I were in a foreign city. There's a feeling of not belonging to such a deserted picture and then at the same time each tree looks very familiar.

To the city and back

Different

Husband has unearthed a bunch of analog cameras and has plunged into long-gone photography. He has also found in a refrigerator dozens of old film rolls to play with -probably expired-. He has returned to photography romanticism. Shooting with the intuition and patiently wait for images to emerge from a dark room. Those times.

And then you have the chance to appreciate the work of a good photographer. We went to see the exhibition of Fazal Sheikh and really noticed the difference. There were these faces, containers of hundreds of stories and censored feelings, photographed with the most sensitivity. Beautiful pictures of a very cruel world.

Down by the river

As I was saying...
After a wonderful dinner in a relaxed atmosphere, surrounded by art pieces, Miles Davis' music playing on the background and peculiar hosts, the day after we embarked to explore Bilbao's river.
Let's rewind.
Some months ago I received a message from this wonderful people, explaining a charity project: the Walk on Project (WoP). This project has been made to generate awareness towards a rare disease (leucodistrofia) which the son of one of these guys is suffering. They aim to build a strong support group and develop many ideas. Well, their website explains it all way better.
Among those who are joining the project are my friend Steve Wynn and his wife Linda. Before getting into the recording studio for a musical collaboration, these guys from the WoP invited me to come along with them, including ship stroll.
Despite the pouring rain, the stroll was extraordinary. Bilbao in its purest: damp, cold, gray, trying to lift off but still retaining unmistakable features of its industrial past. After setting foot onland again, under my umbrella, with frozen smile and hands, we kept walking through wet streets, talking and laughing with newmade friends.

::

Let's pretend

Let's pretend...
...I haven't been away for quite so many days.
It's been quite a fantastic week, meeting old friends and making new ones. Hours of conversations, walking down the streets of Bilbao, going down the city river, sitting to dinner in good company, driving up the mountain through the steepest and slipperiest of tracks and seeing how everything I do now is still connected with everything I did in the past. In the sweetest way.
I'll be posting about it all in the next few days, but here's a little sneak peek of a night out.

::

Hagamos como que...
... no me he ausentado por tantos días.
