The kid I was

When I was a kid I would try on my aunt Karmele's collection of straw hats. I loved them then and I still love straw hats. I only wish I could have a whole collection hanging on my wall as she did.

Me encantaban y todavía me gustan.

Good morning, two years

Ghost Me & Ghost Husband

Today it is one of those days marked on my calendar. One of those days when things happen.
Two years ago I opened the door of my world. Two years of blogging.
Two years of sharing, rambling, meeting people, making friends, learning and growing. Time to celebrate with the beginning of a new project:

"(Everybody's got something to hide except) Me & My Ghost"

These two pictures are part of an experimental series rooted on my hand project and some portraits looking at me from my record collection (such as Steve Wynn's on Fluorescent). I have no idea where this will be headed. Initially I would love it to be an ongoing and long project, but to be true, my ususal lack of time and the juggling of several projects won't make it easy. But I'll give it a try.
Thus, anybody willing to take part of this photographic series will have a chance. You only have to email me with your portrait (with enough resolution quality) and I'll pick those who I think they fit better into the project. These will be posted in this blog and hopefully and eventually in an exhibit. The owners of the chosen portraits will receive them later.

Nostalgia

Top picture: New York, 1992
Bottom picture: Mojave Desert, 1991

On a very untidy shelf at home there are a few boxes piled up, full with old pictures. Since they are unclassified, every time I open one of them boxes I find myself travelling back and forth in time. Nostalgia.
For some reason, once the pictures have been scanned, they have come out a little dark and sharpened, but they still have the spirit of the past as I feel it. The distances didn't matter, It was never cold or hot, the view was always outstanding and the framing of the moment wasn't important at all.

Time off

Now it's warm outside, the next minute it'll be raining. Now we are playing, the next minute we will be suffering a slight headache. A spoonful of medicine and back to playing. Children recover so easily.

Blurred waiting

Marmalade must be growing up, because her knee, right foot and head hurt...
A little fever. A short visit to the pediatrician.

Yesterday

Me he levantado. Me he duchado. He desayunado. Me he puesto rimmel y barra de labios. He llegado al trabajo. He sucumbido ante una montaña de papeles. He resuelto, he charlado, he comido, he contestado a llamadas, he bocetado. Me he recorrido veinte tiendas sin éxito. He vuelto a casa. Mis hijas me han abrazado. He hecho diez cosas más aburridas, de maruja. He leído el periódico. Me he sentado a dibujar unas piedras...
..............................................................................................................................

I've got up. I've had a shower. I've had breakfast. I've put some rimmel and some lipstick on. I've kissed my daughters goodbye, leaving on their little faces a slight mark. They are still enjoying their Easter vacation. I've breathed some fresh morning air. I've arrived at work. I've surrendered to a mountain of papers. I've cleared out, chatted, had lunch, answered phonecalls, sketched... I've looked for a birthday present for my mom. I've covered over twenty stores unsuccessfully. I've come back home. The kids have hugged me. I've done ten boring house things. I've read the newspaper. I've sat and drawed some stones...

Epiphany

At last...
This work-work in crescendo ends here.
When you happen to work at a store in days like these, you witness endless hours of fierce consumerism, desperation, dissapointment, relief and patience.
The day before Epiphany (the most celebrated day in Spain, even more than Christmas Day) I spend every bit of energy I've had left.
Now I'll breathe, I'll rest, I'll heal my hurt shoulder, I'll sit with my black pens and I'll let the images filling my mind replace the tiredness.
And I'll get back to my almost daily posting routine...

Me siento triste hoy.

I feel crooked this end of the week. I have pulled a muscle, and this makes me see little stars when I move my neck or my shoulder. I've taken enough medicines as for standing the morning tasks, buff...
I feel truly sad today. Unai's sailship has suffer some rudder damage in the middle of the South Atlantic. He's in a hard situation, not only facing tough conditions but also frustration and dissapointment.
This was a brave project, an heroic deed, his dream. Just think that only forty people have succeeded in finishing it. With one of the lowest budgets of the fleet he wanted to try. Now his dream will have to wait. But there will be another chance.
And even though family, team, friends and followers feel devastated, I want to send you a big hug. This here's for you!

Selfportrait

Hoy tengo como objetivo(s):
bocetar unas mujeres
vaguear
ver llover pegada a la calefacción
leer un comic
indagar posibles regalos navideños
comprar pan
enfrentarme al ordenador para un trabajo pesado

Today I'm aiming to do:
sketching some girls
lazing around
watch the rain fall while I stand next to the heating
reading a comic book
doing some research for Christmas gifts
buying some bread
facing the computer for some hard work

Unexpected and easy

After a cool and damp saturday came an unexpectedly hot, sticky sunday...
Magical moments at the beach, the kids running in front of the sea... and somebody else's dog...

The ribbon girls

Sometimes they beat you.

See, I don´t like to put ribbons on my daughters' hair. Especially those as huge as helicopter propeller. many of my friends have their girls wearing ribbons and I don't mind. Their girls can look fine to my eyes, but not mine. However, the other day my daughters conspired to make their own big paper ribbons. They wore them everywhere, nobody could talk them otherwise. And everybody stared at them and smiled.

Obviously, one thing is what you want for your girls, and a different one is what reality gives you daily.

mirror mirror

¿Qué veo yo en el espejo?
Una cara familiar y unas cuantas arrugas.
Sonrío. No me desagrada.
¿Qué ve ella?
Una niña que ya no necesita chupete.
Ha crecido.
Le gusta la idea.
¿Y ella?
Disfruta.
El verano avanza.

What do I see in the mirror?
A familiar face and a handful of wrinkles.
I smile. I'm pleased.
What does she see in the mirror?
A girl that doesn't need a dummy anymore.
She's outgrown it.
She likes the idea. She likes herself.
And what about her?
A girl with a new big bike.
She's learnt to ride it.
She's enjoying it.
Summer moves on.

La peluquería. The hairdressing salon.

Me eché a temblar.

I hesitated a little as I entered. The girl was new. In less than five minutes she was confidently calling me by my name. I didn't get to know hers. She spoke a lot, I spoke little. While the water wet my hair, I watched the ceiling. I watched the ceiling and I counted the small built-in lights. I remembered to take off my left earring since it can easily drop. A short hair massage gave me a little break. She offered me a magazine as she was disentangling my hair. Looking through pages and images made me think about drawing. But for a brief time. She insisted on cutting my hair, but I refused obstinately. I trembled. I brought up her belt as topic. She was delighted by me noticing it. She didn't stop smiling and speaking and washing and drying and combing. When she'd finished, I watched myself in the mirror and I recognized myself in it. It was me without the grey hairs. I felt a great relief. She waved me goodbye with a youthful and big smile.

Six things I like today (yesterday)

1. Sleeping an extra half an hour and waking up to a still and quiet house

2. The memory of the previous day at the beach, where we stayed with friends until 9 p.m., swimming, sunbathing, talking, laughing, taking pictures, having icecream...

3. Taking my kids to my work for a couple of hours, watching them drawing happily, buying sunflowers to bring home

4. Finding some pretty blouses on sale for the princesses

5. Taking some time to draw, spreading pens and papers on a big table

6. Going out to dinner with husband

Walking at night alongside him, talking, breathing...

Famapa tagged me. Would Miss Rosenthal and kirti like to play?
