My disjointed recollection of a confusing year

This is how 2011 went...
(a disjointed recollection of a confusing year)

Music. I have to begin with music.
If I had some money to spare I would have bought albums by Bon Iver, PJ Harvey, Tom Waits, Lucinda Williams, Wilco and John Grant, among others. I’m happy enough to listen to them and some more online.
Furthermore, it has not being a year prone to live shows for me, but I keep in my heart and memory the music of Helicón at the Museum of Artistic Reproductions here in Bilbao. A ghostly and enchanted evening.
2011 will be remembered as the year I didn’t go to the movies at all, except for that day I went with my girls to see The Secret World of Arriety. Maybe I will still have a chance to watch, True Grit, The artistDrive, Melancholia, Shame, Pina… movies I have been profusely recommended.
However, this year I have seen and followed more series than I can now remember. My favorites being: Downton Abbey, Enlightened, Game of Thrones and Mildred Pierce. Other series that come to mind and made me laugh were Portlandia, 2 broke girls, and Misfits.
Watching series online has been a treasure I didn't expect.
Again,  I haven’t read as much as I used to (where the hell did all my time go?): Borges, Taniguchi, Camilleri, Murakami, and I have just opened Andersen’s The red shoes.

Now that I look back, it seems that I didn’t go out enough or read enough... but I thank the internet for letting me keep up the pace in a different manner. There is so much I have experienced through my screen:
I can play and replay these videos a dozen times and still feel like

Not to forget the many interesting TED talks that I have played while drawing (like this one). Art and good speakers to hear, a great combo for me.

And as for more art... I have discovered many artists and illustrators this year. More than I could list but at least let me mention some ongoing artist crushes: Jennifer Davies, Jazmin Berakha, Pakayla Biehn, Carson Ellis, and Kiki Smith (here too)
Ricardo Cavolo’s exhibit in Bilbao is worth of being mentioned as well. On a complete different level, I also enjoyed the great Antonio Lopez’s anthology at Bilbao’s Art Museum.

I realize that most of my time was split between vital turnings (moving, diving into the unknown, wandering) not so vital, but time-consuming moments (working on my etsy shop, getting hooked on Pinterest) and many projects:
Personal projects such as my illustrated book covers or my paper-puppets.
Comissioned projects (that set my dreams flying freely) like the cover and inlay art for the WoP album, the Helicón poster or the notebook for Impedimenta.
I have been also following other people’s projects: for example, Boooooooom’s Remake project is not to be missed
.
All in all, a year is made of all kinds of moments, as I have detailed, but there’s also a place and time for awkardness and ridiculousness too (remember this?) Or shocking, touching or bizarre moments like finding a sperm-whale on the beach. Or goodbyes.

I have deliberately left out the heart of this suffocating 2011: the crisis, the protests, the panic, the fear, the illness, the uncertainty. I really want it all out of my blog. I want to press the delete button and only keep the cream of my life.
I am grateful for my family and my friends. I want to keep them all close to me this new year. And I want the good moments and the bizarre ones, the long time no see meetings, the loud and the quiet times, the creative and the homey ones, and let all the exciting new projects begin to grow and come my way.
And as for you, I want you to be happy too.

He descubierto a muchos artistas e ilustradores este año.
Berakha,  Pakayla Biehn,  Carson Ellis y Kiki Smith.

Mucho amor y mucha felicidad, Esti.
