What the wind brings

Sometimes I feel like I deliver a handful of words and a few games and I receive gifts in return. That's how I felt after the workshop. Among other things, I went home with the doll Lady Desidia made. Now she dances for me every morning and as she takes a step, she reminds me of the path my pencil and my fine point pen have to lead. She blushes if I curse out loud, because she's too, and when I nonchalantly hum a song she hops. Now I don't work by myself at all.
I also brought home a nice lamp made by El Lucernario; yes, one of those unique and original lamps, some of you peered in a photo some time back and in my previous post. Well, now these birds give a different warmth to our sunsets, but unfortunately look reluctant to play any song.

::

Two steps forward

Last Saturday I met up with Sara Morante to see the Egon Schiele exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum. As you have probably guesses, staring at every single inch on each framed drawing was a first-class art lesson. I could wander for hours around those decadent characters, those colors and those bold pencil strokes. Needless to say, it was the best way to avoid the rain and the cold outside.
And I went home with a new book under my arm.

::

A playful Friday

This is the character game by Dibujos en Invierno (Drawings in Winter) which we got fro Christmas.
It's so cool and I highly recommend it.
Leave it in children hands and some irresistible outlandish combinations will certainly show up.

Have a good Friday!

¡Buen viernes!

The Passenger

I live with the feeling that I'm spending a lot of my time in the car, driving the same streets, heading down the same straight highway, getting off to climb back and start off again. And then parking.
Anyway, I turn on the radio, which sounds pretty badly, but sometimes I am so lost in thought that I am not aware of the enervating interferences. I try to elaborate drawings in my head or I pretend to rearrange the future rooms of my future home. And so I spend the time in my car.

That's why I enjoy any time of quietness and contemplation.
(And I give myself extra treats such as Depeapa's tote bag)

::

Today's music:

I am the passenger and I ride and I ride
I ride through the city's backsides
I see the stars come out of the sky
Yeah, the bright and hollow sky
You know it looks so good tonight

I am the passenger; I stay under glass

I look through my window so bright
I see the stars come out tonight
I see the bright and hollow sky
Over the city's ripped backsides
And everything looks good tonight
Singing la la la la la..

Get into the car, we'll be the passenger

We'll ride through the city tonight
We'll see the city's ripped backsides
We'll see the bright and hollow sky
We'll see the stars that shine so bright
Stars made for us tonight

Oh, the passenger

How, how he rides
Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides
He looks through his window
What does he see?
He sees the sign and hollow sky
He sees the stars come out tonight
He sees the city's ripped backsides
He sees the winding ocean drive
And everything was made for you and me
All of it was made for you and me
'Cause it just belongs to you and me
So let's take a ride and see what's mine
Singing la la la la..

Oh the passenger

He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his window side
He sees the things that he knows are his
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He sees the city sleep at night
He sees the stars are out tonight
And all of it is yours and mine
And all of it is yours and mine
So let's ride and ride and ride and ride
Oh, oh, Singing la la la la lalalala

Put a Black Oveja in your life

Sssssshhhh
Do not tell anyone
I have a Black Oveja blanket to put under the Christmas tree.
This year I'm trying to get ahead from the frenzy of the season and I'm planning to buy as many gifts as possible, directly from artists, crafters and indie makers.
Let's see, the next thing on the list is a t-shirt...
Now, does anyone have tips for cool (very cool) girls tees?

::

Sssssssssshhhh

Black Oveja

I received this pretty invitation to the opening of Black Oveja shop a few days back. I couldn't attend but a lot of people did and now it's all over the blogosphere, acknowledging how wonderful this shop is.
If you have the chance to come by, please say hi to Merche and Sandra for me.
Everything they touch is magic.

Last Saturday

This weekend we've had time to see family, to shop in Bilbao, to go to the beach, to attend a birthday party and yes, to watch some tennis. The girls wanted to show some support making some great drawings.

::

Some art

There are times that I can't help buying what I like on an impulse, especially when it comes to affordable art, like those in these here pictures. Some other times I am truly lucky to be able to trade pieces with other artists. Later, I face the real problem: I don't know how to frame them or which wall I should hand them on. This is really a tricky business because half of the walls at my place have a tendency to shred when they see a nail coming near them, and I just don't think it's a great idea to have holes and chipped parts everywhere. Nevermind, I say to myself, art should be enjoy as it comes.

In the above pictures:
"Refrain" print by Jennifer Davis. I can only hope to be able to afford one of her originals in the future. if there's anybody out there willing to buy me a gift, here's her shop.
Photograph by Katrina Rodabaugh.
Letterpress print by Sarajo Frieden.
And another letterpress print by Gemma Correll.

  ::

Saturn, my dear

So Friday arrived... (sigh)
It's a pretty and smiling Friday. It's a Friday in a busy kinda week. And if I look back over my shoulder, not only I can see the done work and the halfway to finished tasks, but I can also see the stream of little goodies that have arrived at my mailbox. Like this necklace by Après Ski, which got here the same day princess Marmalade was studying for an astronomy exam. Needless to say, Saturn will always be our favourite.

::

Y llegó el viernes... (suspiro)

Different

Husband has unearthed a bunch of analog cameras and has plunged into long-gone photography. He has also found in a refrigerator dozens of old film rolls to play with -probably expired-. He has returned to photography romanticism. Shooting with the intuition and patiently wait for images to emerge from a dark room. Those times.

And then you have the chance to appreciate the work of a good photographer. We went to see the exhibition of Fazal Sheikh and really noticed the difference. There were these faces, containers of hundreds of stories and censored feelings, photographed with the most sensitivity. Beautiful pictures of a very cruel world.

::

A new window

Gracias husband.

::

For days I've been meaning to sit down and type some words, but it's almost impossible to focus on the keyboard when Christmas is swirling around you at its best, filling up every single minute. Also, a girl who's come down with the flu, a weak internet connection and some great visitors are keeping me away from here.
However, I wanted to share this with you. Because, as much as I say it, it barely happens: giving art or books means you are adding doors to open in your world. Opening doors to imagination. Opening windows to your soul. And now I have a new one on my wall: this original piece by Lady Desidia.
Thank you husband.

Revista Atelier

::

A couple of weeks ago lovely Vanesa asked me to replace the photographer who was scheduled for Marta's feature on Atelier magazine. Photographing for a magazine was surely a challenge for me, but I never hesitate to dive into projects where I can learn new things, especially if said projects are tied to such interesting and eager people.
The scenario Marta chose for the shoot was the new Bilbao Alhondiga, an old building redone by Philippe Starck, right in the center of the city. I must say that albeit having visited it in many an occasion, it was a pleasure to see it anew through the passionate eyes of Marta. Apart from that, I admired the patience she and Bea (Atelier's chief editor) had. Plus Marta's composure as she was being photographed was beyond remarkable, under an incessant rain and in the coldest day of all. Stoical and with a perpetual smile on her face.
