Two steps forward

Last Saturday I met up with Sara Morante to see the Egon Schiele exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum. As you have probably guesses, staring at every single inch on each framed drawing was a first-class art lesson. I could wander for hours around those decadent characters, those colors and those bold pencil strokes. Needless to say, it was the best way to avoid the rain and the cold outside.

And I went home with a new book under my arm.

El sábado quedé con Sara Morante para ver la exposición de Egon Schiele en el Guggenheim. Como imaginaréis, observar cada centímetro de esos cuadros es una lección de dibujo. Podría vagar horas por entre esos personajes decadentes, esos colores y esos trazos valientes. Sin ninguna duda, la mejor forma de esquivar la lluvia y el frío.

Y volví a casa con un nuevo libro bajo el brazo.

El Principito

In a span of a few days I've managed to get two of my all time favourite books. I first read them as a kid, and now my daughters are enjoying them, although today's editions are far better than my old ones. For starters, The Little Prince. Followed by The Jungle Book.

Drawings of the first are insuperable, you know.

En un intervalo de muy pocos días he conseguido apoderarme de dos de mis libros favoritos de todos los tiempos. Los leí por primera vez de niña y ahora son mis hijas las que los disfrutan, aunque las ediciones actuales son mucho mejores que las que yo tenía. Para empezar, El Principito. Seguido de El Libro de la Selva.

Los dibujos del primero son insuperables, ya sabéis.

I still carry you around

Todas las mañanas a la misma hora Laura miraba por la ventana. Sopesaba qué ropa ponerse, peinaba su pelo largo, tomaba un café, se ponía colonia detrás de las orejas y salía de casa.
Hacía años que de camino a alguna parte recorría las mismas calles. Pensamientos dulces y amargos en cada esquina. Y aunque los recuerdos le acompañasen en su caminar, no sentía nostalgia, añoraba poco o a casi nadie. Se negaba a reconocer que a veces sentía la sombra de algún rostro conocido que no conseguía olvidar del todo. Especialmente en primavera.
Laura sonrió al pasear una mañana de verano espléndida.


Every morning at the exact same time Laura looked through her window. She weighed what to wear, brushed her long hair, had her coffee, spilt some cologne at the back of her ears and came out.
For years she had walked the same streets in her way somewhere. Sweet and sour thoughts almost at every corner. And although many memories joined her in her walk, she didn’t feel nostalgic, didn’t miss much or almost anybody. She refused to acknowledge that sometimes she felt the shadow of some known face hard to forget. Especially on spring.
Laura smiled as she strolled on a beautiful summer morning.

Acabo de comprar este libro para mi hija pequeña. Se lo va a pasar "de bomba", como le ha dado por decir ahora. Este libro te anima a hacer chapuzas, a garabatear, que es muy importante.

I've just bought this book for my younger daughter. She's gonna have so much fun with it. This book encourages kids to scribble all over it, which is really important for a kid.

Murakami

¡Qué estupenda sorpresa! En cuanto ha salido a la venta me lo he comprado. El último libro de Murakami "Sauce ciego, mujer dormida" promete ser conmovedor y corrosivo. La belleza de sus historias, de su lenguaje, ha hecho de él uno de mis autores favoritos. Recomiendo entusiastamente "Tokio Blues" y "Al sur de la Frontera, al oeste del Sol.

Y aunque alejado geográficamente, también he resuelto que era un buen momento para la melancólica música de Bonnie Prince Billy.

Hoy es el día de los artistas sensibles...

What a gratifying surprise! I've bought the book as soon as it's been published. The latest Murakami will surely be moving and corrosive. The beauty of his stories and his language has made him one of my contemporary favourite writers. I enthusiastically recomend "Tokyo Blues" and "South of the Border, West of the Sun" (I don't really know the correct titles of the English edition)

Although geographycally far apart, I thought it'd be a good moment for Bonnie Prince Billy melancholic music as well.
