Fears and dogs

No sabemos qué hacer.

We don't know what to do. Many fears have sprout inside Princess Nutella. Sometimes we can't even get out of home. She panickes. Will this pass?

Tiene miedo de / She's scared of:

1. Truenos / Thunder
2. Granizo / Hail
3. Viento fuerte / Strong winds
4. Fogatas /Bonfires
5. Perros / Dogs
6. Ruidos sordos en casa / Muffled sounds at home
7. Globos / Balloons
8. Petardos / Firecrackers

hmmm.. i can only talk from my own experience, i remember when i was a child and afraid of many things.
i went to one room in our house closed the door and said; ok, now you can come. then i imagined all those frightening things coming under the door. they had to shrink them self to fit. so when they were in the room, they were too tiny to be frightening any more..

Yes, it will pass! Everything always changes!

I found with Miss Commentbox (who is now 17) it was often helpful to talk to an expert in childhood development/psychology...just to calm myself and maybe get some new creative ideas.

Princess Nutella is so blessed to have you as her mother Esti! You walk and talk, so wonderful!!!!!

I guess she´s just like her mum. Do you remember that situation when we met a huge dog burking fierously and running towards us?. The chain broke down and the spanish mastin kept approaching towards us. Such a wonderful moment!. In only a second, you hold me by the waist and put me upfront facing the monster. That was an excellent shock therapy. Maybe our daughter needs something more subtle to start facing her fears.

I think it is natural for children to have all kinds of fears - and I think they do grow out of most of them with time. I think one should not pressurise a child to not be fearful, if they are not ready to let go of the fear yet. For a little child a dog can be quite scary, and the last thing they want to hear is a parent saying: "don't be scared!" They want (I think!) the parent to say: "Yes, I understand that you are afraid. Tell me why." I think it is important that the child knows that the parent takes his fears seriously. It is also important to find out exactly why she is afraid of something. In the case of the dog: is it because she thinks it will bite? Is it because she associates dogs with barking? Is it because she saw something on TV about dogs? It sounds as though a lot of her fears involve noise of some kind - maybe she is quite sensitive to noise and it hurts her ears? But if it is so bad that she prevents you from going to places because of her fears, it is probably the best to speak to a psychologist.

Oh, I wanted to add that I think the walks and talks you have with your daughters are so wonderful! They probably help Princess Nutella a lot to face her fears ...

Oh sweet little heart. I had one of those, though his worries were deep and profound and so hard to explain away. (What supports the Earth in space? Will the sun burn out? That one just last night. He's 12.) It does get better, but you have to be patient.

And I agree with everything Anairam says. They just need to be heard.

I thank you all for your sweet words.
I admit I was a fearful child too. I'm still full of fears. My eldest daughter has her own little fears too as the average child; however, the little one doesn't have just these fears. She panickes. When one of these situations I've described in the post happens, she remains blocked, saying a mantra like "i'm scared, i'm scared, i'm scared" for a long time. at this point she doesn't hear anybody or reacts to anything else. This goes on for fifteen minutes, half an hour or more. She's had some panic fits at school and her teachers say it doesn't have anything to do with the usual fears of her age. We've been told to patiently wait a couple of months to see how this developes and if it worsens we'll have to take her to the psychologist.

Quiero creer
