We talk as we walk, part 1: Burnt

I picked her at school. I smiled when I saw her toothless smile coming out of the door to the schoolyard, among many toothless smiles. Kisses, some doubtful minutes and we headed to the seashore for a walk.

Some far and big waves, and a playful and cold breeze, greeted us. We walked a little, chatting of her affairs, her grey eyes underlining every detail about her school universe. We found ourselves in front of a burnt forest. I remembered reading about that fire the previous summer. I was surprised by the trunks darkness, the branches fragility and the surrounding silence. Like blackened shadows, the trees headed to the sky. She felt some curiosity, some fear. She took my hand.

- I know what happened – she said
- Somebody has thrown some broken glass and then the sun and the glass burnt the leaves…
- Maybe.
- Or maybe somebody was smoking and didn’t know you can’t throw your cigarette on the ground. Smoking in the forest shouldn’t be allowed.

- Sure.
- Plus, there aren’t any fire extinguisers here.
- Nope.
- A whole forest can be burnt with a lighter, right?

- I guess so.
- Why would anyone want to burn a forest? The fire turns it black and the birds don’t come anymore.

- Claro.
- Además, no hay extintores.
- No, claro.

yes a burnt forest is sad, growing takes a lot of time, it is a sad sight to see how fast damage can be done.
