The bear
I looked at him and I only saw a stranger with his hands on the steering wheel, sporting proudly a new watch on his right wrist. I never wear watches, I thought, as I smiled. He thought I was acknowledging the estatus that brand was suppossed to give him. I was smiling because I felt released completely and only thought about the mountain showing up behind his head through the window and I wondered if someday I'd climb it. I knew I wouldn't, but even so I still kept the smile on my face, listening to some car horns resonating at a road-crossing nearby where the traffic lights had stopped working weeks ago.
And I remembered then the swimming pool I used to swim in during summer, when things were fine. And I remembered the flashing smiles and the nights of heat and wind. For a time now, many of these memories were only a handful of photos stuck on an album. Sitting quietly on the bookcase. That guy had come to save me with his expensive watch and I knew that it was going to be useless as soon as I got into the car and he tried to ingratiate with me with a few rotten jokes and his Lenny Kravitz concert report from the previous week. I smiled and it was comforting to think that our galaxies were separated by million of inactive black holes. Still seated in the same car we would never meet. And although I knew all the words he pronounced, I didn't understand their meaning. For a moment I felt uneasy and aware of my possible ignorance, but I rolled down my window a crack and the air gave me back my smile. Before his stupor I put out my head and catched some sunrays on my skin as I hummed a Bonnie Prince Billy song. Then I knew I was alive.

The wolf
The telephone woke him up with its frightful ringing. He tried to reach it with his hand, but he didn't find it in the shadows. He opened his eyes a little wider, enough as to see the telephone on the floor just a few centimeters away from the trousers and the t-shirt he had wore the night before. It was too late. They had already hung. He didn't even bothered to check the call details on the screen. He puffed as he got back into his bed and layed his head on the pillow. He thought that maybe it was about time to buy some new pieces of furrniture. He rejected the idea, after all, the only people that came to visit him were friends in a similar situation and as everybody knows, men didn't mind decoration, the wall color or the untidiness. He enjoyed his mess, his accredited chaotic corner, full of books, cds, magazines and the computer on at all hours. The cell phone rang again and this time he picked it up effortlessly. His siter was persistent enough, he must have guessed. Well, he told himself, If he hadn't answered she wouldn't have stopped calling him. Following the conversation became a game. He knew the script and respected it perfectly. Soon he could return to his bed, but it was already too late. He decided to have a proper Sunday. He pretended to tidy up a bit, took a shower, got dressed, considered the possibility of shaving and finally refused. With air in his lungs and without cigarettes in his pockets he walked towards the beach. There was almost nobody in sight yet and the view before him was spectacular. He heard a motorcycle in the distance.
