My mother in law is from outer space

My mother in law is from outerspace.
Her world, that fantasy surrounding her that seems about to swallow her huge artistic talent, is full of surprises. Her home is her workshop. Her workshop is her home. Everything is mixed up and blended. Her paintings, her friends' paintings, her sculptures, ridiculous devices, hanging mobiles, paints, pens, clay, plastic sheets, recycled furniture, art decó pieces, commercial posters, exhibition and museum catalogues, family pictures, redesigned clothing, rebuilded toys, broken objects, mirrors, and an endless number of gadgets that I happen not to understand at all.

My kids love this world of hers. It's a homemade amusement park, where they are allowed to do anything: jump on beds, paint in many different surfaces with many different kinds of paint, get dirty from hair to toes and make discovery after discovery.

Yesterday evening my mother in law presented me with a pile of papers. Dozens of pages from magazines from the twenties, the thirties and the forties. Commercials, society revues, fashion and beauty articles. One by one I devoured with my eyes those papers, astonished at the incredible charm of a past time.

yes, I have a great mother in law, but if you visit her you have to be prepared, watch out where you sit (you might spoil your favourite dress), what you step upon... Her house is so full of things that sometimes is close to dangerous (broken mirrors when the kids were crawling babies) or uncomfortable (all the chairs covered with stuff she's handling at that moment, for example). I love the creative tsunami she is, when you understand her. However, my husband would deeply disagree at this point. He thinks she is so unresponssible!! And, yes, she is.
I'll post more about her fascinating side.

wow-- her house sounds like a trip through the looking glass, so to speak! these are amazing images. what a treat!

although we keep a very neat house, i think that my husband sometimes feels like he is entering a disaster-area whenever he comes into the studio. luckily-- no broken glass, just lots of papers, paints and stacks of books!

Brilliant! The best type of grandmother is one who quietly encourages anarchy! Every child should have one!

And thank you for sharing these amazing images!

What treasures (both the grandmother and the magazines).

today somebody told my mother in law I had posted about her. She was sooo happy. She says she wants a permanent monthly feature in my blog. I'm obliged :)

Lucky you, wonderful for your child and for your husband. It is not matter of course that everybody likes each other in the family. She seems fantastic ( I will look in to her home).
I have a good relationship to my mother in law (she is a piano player) but she is very old and tired…
Happy reading and I say it again – I like your blog!!!!!!!!!!!
