Una historia de Septiembre

The first day he got up late. He wanted to enjoy every minute of laziness. He didn’t feel like shaving and ended having breakfast at ease at a dinner close to his home. He bought the newspaper, took a long walk and finally sat on a bench, watching the people, the clouds and the delivery vans passing by. That was the first time he had chosen September to have his holidays and he savoured the sensation of being still amongst a busy crowd. He felt somehow superior.

On the third day, he was awoken by a terrible noise that made the bed and the walls tremble. When he recovered from the initial fright he reached for the alarm clock that said it was 8 a.m. and got up in a extremely bad mood. He could hear some men’s voices mixed with the thuds on the other side of the wall. When the big noises stopped the sound of music on an old radio managed to get through. “Fuck, my damned luck, the neighbour thinks of renovating his place right when I’m on vacation”. He picked his headphones and played the Beatles’ White Album, trying to calm down a little.

Day after day, the works continued. Thud, thud, hammering, high-pitched annoying noise, thud, thud. The day before the neighbour had smiled to him on the stairs' landing when he got around to asking about the renovation, faking well-mannered curiosity. “Not a single apology”, he said to himself, “In a situation like this, I’d have surely apologized for the nuisance”. He liked it when people liked him.

He grabbed a yoghourt from the freezer, a little out of date, but who cared. He was still in time of watching his diet, maybe doing some swimming or a little jogging, he was lucky not to be bald. Thud, thud, hammering. The noise stopped and a Queen song came through from the workers’ radio. He tried to picture them doing some eighties choreography. He cursed eighties’ music and burn it into his memory not to waste his vacation period in September ever again. He fetched his headphones, closed the window shutters and lied down in the dark.

...........................................................................................
